Subjects of interest include his business interests in coal, salt, brick and telephone industries as well as his belief in spiritualism. Letter of 27 April 1886 discusses the 1860 election of Abraham Lincoln.

Speed was a Lt. in the 27th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He later became an important businessman in Louisville, Ky. with investments in the cement, sale, brick and telephone industries as well as real estate in Louisville and Chicago.
